Do you react to tone? Tone of voice, music, any type of sound?
Have you ever wondered why?
I’ve always liked a smooth, rich, deep voice and only last night I understood why. My Dear Dad was talking to me and I went neutral to observe the tone of his voice as I didn’t like what I was hearing. Was it the words he was directing to me, or the tone of those words?
His tone was high and rather childish. Was he judging me? or joking? or according to the tone of his voice, was he worried about my response?
He’d seen my pyjamas and commented “I wouldn’t be caught dead in those.”
Well, a myriad of replies went through my mind. Instead I remained silent and observing. The longer I remained in quiet observation, the more he spoke and I could see that he was processing his own initial response. He finished by saying that maybe he’s not confident. Bingo! You’ve got it Dad! and so did I.
While his words were about what I was wearing, he was actually speaking emotionally about something in his past.
I could have reacted to his words and the subsequent result would have been disastrous. I know this from previous experiences with him.
I could have laughed and made it a joke.
I could have asked him what he meant.
Any of these responses would have changed the outcome.
The best response, which turned out to be correct and beneficial for both of us, was to do exactly what I did.
I recall when I first left home and moved in with my then partner. He observed my tone of voice and would tell me to drop my jaw. When I do so, my tone lowers and is much more pleasant to my own ears, and I found that others are more receptive. I still have to remind myself on occasion to relax my jaw.
This is why I like a smooth, rich, deep voice. It sounds safe.
Have you listened to any of my emotionoil videos I post on FB? My tone of voice changes a lot throughout the 1.5-3mins. Inhaling the oils always bring me back into my body and my voice goes soft. You can tell when I’m excited or anxious as it goes up again. Yes, I’m human and have no desire to be perfect. How boring would that be?!
Have you ever listened to the tone of others?
Have you ever considered your tone of voice?
Have you ever listened to yourSelf?
